Your body is not the problem. Airplanes are.

I’ve flown economy, premium economy, and First Class across 15 countries as a size 26–28, and I believe the most elevated journeys are the one’s where your body is fully welcome. Luxury isn’t champagne in the lounge. Luxury is fitting comfortably, boarding without anxiety, and knowing—before you book—that your body is not the problem.

If you’ve ever left a flight thinking “I need to lose weight before I travel again”—this guide is for you.

1. “I Don’t Fit in Airline Seats”

🥂 Soft Luxury Tip – Book economy plus! The you get added 3-4 inches of leg room feels like more space, priority boarding.

✨Jennifer’s Tip: Given the option, I’m flying Delta even if it’s more expensive.

This is not a body issue. It’s a measurement issue.

Most economy seats are 17–18 inches wide. That’s it.That number doesn’t care how generous, confident, or excited you are.

Always book the aisle seat (arm rest can lift up for extra room), and never book the first row (bulkhead row), those armrests do not move.

Affirmation: My body is worthy of exploration.

2. “Premium Economy Must Be Better”

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it absolutely isn’t.

Premium Economy sounds ideal:

  • Wider seats (18.5–19.5”), More pitch, Better service

But here’s the catch:

  • Fixed armrests, No flexibility for hips, Can feel more restrictive than economy, tray tables often stored in arms of chair.

  • You still have to use the economy bathrooms.

💡 Hard truth: More inches don’t help if you can’t use them.

✨Jennifer’s Tip: I’m always choosing the aisle seat and I’m calling or researching ahead of time if the armrests will or will not go up, and where the tray table comes.

Use Seat Guru! It’s incredible helpful for moveable armrests.

Affirmation: I am worthy of comfort, respect, and belonging, wherever I go.

3. “Needing a Seatbelt Extender Is Embarrassing”

No, it’s operational.

Seatbelt lengths vary by aircraft—not by worthiness.

  • Extenders are routine

  • Flight crews handle this daily, legally have to be given out for free.

You can’t sit in an exit row with an extender (safety rule, not punishment. Plenty of other options on the plane for leg room.

⚠️ Exception: You can’t sit in an exit row with an extender (safety rule, not punishment. Plenty of other options on the plane for leg room.

👉 Jennifer’s Tip: Ask as soon as you board. No explanations required.

If you feel shame here, it’s because airlines don’t normalize this—not because you’re doing anything wrong.

Affirmation: You are entitled to fly safely and comfortably; an extender ensures the belt fits correctly.

4. ”I have to fly in First or Business class to fit.”

For many plus-size travelers, this isn’t indulgence—it’s alignment. You do not have to, but if you want to be most comfortable, with the most room, then yes this is the option for you.

Domestic First Class

  • Pro: Seat width: ~19–21”

  • Con: Still not easier for tray tables, often stored in the arm rest – for me this doesn’t work.

Business Class (Long-Haul)

  • Pro: Seat width: 20–22”+

  • Con: Lie-flat options, still doesn’t eliminate all seat anxiety. However, this is the most comfortable option

💬 Reframe: Paying for comfort is opting out of systems that weren’t built for you. Have I upgraded to first class just to use the larger bathroom? Yes, yes I have.

⭐ Jennifer’s Tip: First class isn’t always the perfect solution, sometimes tray tables

Affirmation: I am beautiful, present, and worthy of comfort.

5. ”Ugly Truth about Airline Bathrooms.”

It’s part of flying. Especially long haul.

Will you fit? I don’t know that’s totally your body type. Every person is different shape and size. I can tell you it won’t be comfortable.

What should you do?

Research your specific aircraft. If it’s long haul, they generally have a handicapped bathroom. Select your seat to be most convenient to use this one. However, still know where it is an ask to use. This is ADA compliance; you are not being extra.

Affirmation: Confidence comes from clarity, not from pretending it doesn’t matter.

Final Thoughts: This was never about your body.

You are not too big. You are not difficult. You are not an exception.

Until the industry catches up, you travel informed, prepared, and unapologetic.

✨ Comfort is not a bonus. Dignity is not optional. You deserve both.
